CashKO, the microinsurance subsidiary of RuralNet, has taken its calamity coverage nationwide, extending protection to borrowers of partner microfinance institutions. It isn’t a policy consumers buy directly — coverage comes bundled through an MFI that offers CashKO protection via RuralNet’s platform.
The timing tracks the need. NDRRMC data shows roughly 7.5 million people affected by cyclones Luis, Maymay, Neneng, and this year’s habagat monsoon. A 2024 survey found 87% of MFI borrowers wanted calamity coverage, per CashKO Insurance Brokerage CEO Justin Arcenas at the 2026 MCPI conference, with typhoons topping their list of concerns.
For now, coverage runs on the current indemnity product: a verified claim, supported by photos and documentation of home damage, typically results in around PHP 5,000 in emergency support. That’s changing in Q4, when CashKO launches a parametric insurance option.
Instead of an individual inspection, payouts will trigger once satellite and ground-station data confirm a preset disaster threshold — a typhoon category or earthquake magnitude — has been reached. The company says the two-track approach, refined through an earlier pilot covering Typhoons Tino and Uwan, is meant to balance thorough verification with the need for speed when large numbers of households are affected at once.
The impact is already showing up in real claims. Joy Verano, a teacher in Masbate City, received support after Typhoon Opong in 2025. “Iyong pera na ibinigay sa amin, nabili agad namin ng priority at pangangailangan ng pamilya ko,” she said — without it, she had nothing else to fall back on.
Arcenas summed up the goal this way: “Our goal is to ensure that a calamity does not become a setback that pushes families further into financial hardship.” Since 2019, CashKO has reached over 6 million underserved Filipinos and approved more than 33,000 claims, with 16,000-plus of those processed in 2025 alone.
